THE CONFUSING CHOICE OF PHEVs has just become even more so with the launch of Cupra’s mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV. The all-new Terramar VZe flagship medium SUV arriving from $77,990, plus on road costs (see below for driveaway prices).
Perfectly illustrating the Cupra positioning above the mainstream and as a design- and dynamics-led attainable alternative to luxury brands, the VZe lands in November 2025 as the Terramar at its technology and equipment zenith.
The Cupra Gen2 PHEV drivetrain incorporates a highly efficient 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and electric motor to deliver 200kW of power and 400Nm of torque.
Driving the front wheels through a 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) with paddleshifters, the Terramar VZe combines engagement with efficiency – 0-100km/h in 7.3 seconds and 110km WLTP electric range from the 20kWh battery, recharging with both 11kW AC charging and 50kW DC charging capabilities for maximum flexibility.
The result is combined-cycle fuel consumption from just 0.5L/100km, ensuring the Terramar VZe ideally caters to the driving enthusiast who commutes on weekdays and escapes the city confines on the weekends.
Based on the specification of the Terramar VZ, the VZe is a PHEV that is designed to be enjoyed on weekends and through winding roads, with a 20-inch ‘Hadron’ black and copper wheel and tyre package, Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) Pro and driving profiles (Comfort, Performance, Cupra and Individual) as standard.
Other technology and luxury highlights include Matrix Ultra cascading high beams, 360-degree camera, power tailgate with kick sensor, smart entry and push-button start, head-up display, Supersport heated steering wheel, Deep Burgundy leather-appointed seat trim, sports bucket power and heated front seats with driver memory, 12-speaker Sennheiser sound system and 3-zone climate control with rear controls as standard.
A 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit, 12.9-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and wireless phone charger are also standard.
Front and rear parking sensors with Park Assist, Tyre Pressure Warning System, Front Assist with Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection, Side Assist with Exit Assist, Driver Fatigue Monitor, Emergency Assist, Speed Sign Recognition, Speed Limit Assist and semi-autonomous Travel Assist incorporating Adaptive Cruise Control and active Lane Assist round out a comprehensive safety package included with every Cupra Terramar.
Cupra head of product Jeff Shafer said the all-new Terramar VZe represents the best values of the Barcelona challenger brand.
“The Cupra Terramar VZe proves that medium SUVs can be both engaging and efficient, stylish and spacious,” Mr Shafer said.
“Cupra engineers have retained the fun-to-drive focus on the driver of the Terramar, while designing a highly advanced plug-in hybrid system that simultaneously offers strong power and torque, a long electric range, DC fast charging and low consumption.”
“The powertrain and chassis fundamentals are all wrapped in a stylish SUV body with a high-quality interior that offers luxury equipment and plenty of space. It’s hard to think of a more complete and rounded package for the driver and family alike.”
Cupra Terramar VZe options include $2900 Century Bronze matte paint or $620 Dark Void premium paint, and $2000 panoramic sunroof. Glacial White, Midnight Black, Cosmos Blue, Fiord Blue and Timanfaya Grey are included.
The Terramar VZe rounds out a complete medium SUV line-up that includes the Terramar S with an efficient mild-hybrid system, the Terramar V with a balanced 150kW and 320Nm turbo petrol engine and the focused Terramar VZ with a 195kW and 400Nm turbo petrol engine.
Cupra’s new model offensive continues in Australia following the launches of the Cupra Tavascan battery electric vehicle (BEV) and the Terramar mild-hybrid, performance petrol and PHEV range within the popular medium SUV segment. They will be complemented by the upgraded Leon hatch and first Leon Sportstourer in October.
