LIKE SOME OTHER MANUFACTURERS, GWM has used the Melbourne Motor Show (April 10-12) to launch its new model, in this case, the Ora 5 SUV, a next-generation SUV that represents a significant advancement in the brand’s New Energy Vehicle (NEV) strategy and reinforces its commitment to expanding accessible Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) options for Australian customers.

Scheduled to arrive in local showrooms with incredibly sharp pricing from June, the all-new Ora 5 SUV is set to lead an expanded Ora line-up, bringing increased size, capability and gravitas to the nameplate while reinforcing GWM’s focus on delivering affordable, technology-led electric mobility across core growth segments.

Sitting within the highly competitive small SUV category, this addition broadens the appeal of the Ora brand by pairing a more substantial footprint with distinctive design, advanced in-car technology and a fully electric powertrain engineered to meet the demands of urban, suburban and long-distance driving in Australian conditions.

Importantly, the launch of the new Ora 5 SUV marks the beginning of an expanded Ora line-up, with additional new models scheduled to arrive throughout this year and into 2027. With GWM already well established in Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) offerings, the expansion of the Ora EV range will further strengthen the brand’s New Energy credentials while delivering greater choice for buyers.

The pricing strategy for the new Ora 5 SUV sets the tone for price positioning of future Ora models.

The addition of new EV models also positions GWM to capitalise on the evolving New Vehicle Efficiency Standards (NVES), building further momentum towards its ‘Drive to Top 5’ ambition.

Next-Generation Electric Intelligence

The Ora 5 SUV will launch in Australia and New Zealand exclusively as a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), aligning with GWM’s commitment to delivering efficient, zero-emissions mobility built on the Ora platform.

Power is delivered by a high-efficiency front-mounted electric motor producing 150kW and 260Nm, delivering smooth, responsive performance suited to both urban environments and open-road driving. Energy is supplied by a 58.3kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied from supplied by SVOLT, GWM’s dedicated EV battery development division, supporting a driving range of up to approximately 430km (WLTC). Power consumption is 15.5kWh/100km.

For everyday usability, the vehicle supports DC fast charging at up to 120kW, enabling a 30 to 80 percent recharge in approximately 20 minutes under optimal conditions, while AC charging supports convenient overnight replenishment. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality further enhances versatility, delivering up to 6kW of external power for a wide range of lifestyle and recreational applications.

Underpinning the system is GWM’s 15-in-1 intelligent electric drive architecture, integrating key hardware and software into a single unit to deliver faster response times, improved system efficiency and enhanced energy management. With energy conversion efficiency of up to 95 percent, the Ora 5 SUV reflects a highly optimised, next-generation electric drivetrain.

Exterior Design Shaped by Light and Aerodynamics

The Ora 5 SUV evolves GWM’s signature design language, blending retro-inspired character with a more confident and contemporary execution. Fluid body surfaces create a cohesive, sculpted form, balancing visual softness with aerodynamic intent.

At the front, water drop-inspired LED headlights introduce a distinctive lighting signature, integrated within a clean, closed fascia and sharper surfacing that enhances stance and width. A reprofiled front bumper incorporates larger ventilation openings and side air ducts, contributing to both aerodynamic efficiency and a more assertive appearance.

Compared to its predecessor, the Ora 5 adopts a larger, more planted footprint with overall dimensions of 4471mm (L) x 1833mm (W) x 1641mm (H) resulting in increases of 236mm, 8mm, and 38mm respectively. Wheelbase has also grown to 2720mm, an increase of 70mm over the Ora hatch. These dimensional gains contribute to stronger proportions, improved interior space and greater road presence. Ground clearance of 175mm supports everyday usability while maintaining a low, crossover stance.

In profile, a distinctive four-leaf clover wheel design provides a unique visual signature, combining organic inspiration with a sense of motion. At the rear, daybreak-inspired taillights form a continuous light bar, creating a clean, horizontal emphasis that enhances width and delivers a refined, modern finish.

A Tech-First Cabin Designed for Everyday Use

Inside, the Ora 5 SUV introduces a clean, modern cabin centred around GWM’s latest Coffee OS intelligent cockpit. A 14.6-inch central display serves as the primary interface for vehicle functions, media and navigation, delivering a high-resolution, responsive user experience.

The system supports advanced voice control, over-the-air updates and wireless smartphone connectivity, ensuring seamless integration with everyday digital ecosystems. Key functions are intuitively positioned to reduce complexity and support driver focus.

This technology is complemented by a thoughtfully executed interior, featuring soft-touch materials and a minimalist layout that enhances comfort and refinement. Practicality remains a key focus, with 362 litres of boot capacity supporting everyday usability.

A Palette of Expression

The Ora 5 is offered in a palette of five vibrant exterior colours, allowing customers to express their individuality with confidence. Complementing its bold exterior, the cabin is available in two thoughtfully curated interior themes, classic black or a lighter cream finish (dependent on exterior colours), designed to suit a range of personal tastes and styling preferences. Together, these options ensure the ORA 5 delivers a cohesive blend of character, comfort and modern appeal.

Strong Value Positioning

Reflecting the strong market opportunity for the all-new Ora 5 SUV and GWM’s long-standing strategy to accessible pricing, the brand has secured highly competitive positioning for the SUV. Despite its larger size and enhanced capability, the Ora 5 SUV is priced in line with the outgoing Ora hatch, delivering strong value for customers stepping into the next generation of the Ora lineup.

With a clear focus on value, the Ora 5 SUV enters the market with highly competitive driveaway pricing across the range, starting from $33,990 for the Lux grade and $36,990 for the high-grade Ultra.

With larger overall dimensions, increased range and an enhanced interior with improved infotainment and connectivity, these price points signify incredible value and set the tone for the price positioning of future Ora models.

These specifications, combined with its pricing structure, reinforce the Ora 5 SUV’s position as a compelling value proposition within the small SUV segment. The model brings together distinctive design, the intelligent Coffee OS operating system and practical everyday usability, delivering a balanced blend of technology, efficiency and accessibility.
