CONTINUING ITS EXPANSION into electric vehicles, BMW is adding the iX3 40 to the fully electric BMW iX3 range, the second drive system variant of the Neue Klasse Sports Activity Vehicle.
Arriving in Australia in Q4 2026, the BMW iX3 40 will be priced at $89,900 (plus on road costs) positioning the model below the Luxury Car Tax threshold.
Following the market arrival of the BMW iX3 50 xDrive this month (June), the BMW iX3 40 offers customers an additional entry point into BMW’s next-generation electric mobility experience. It combines efficiency, long-range capability and advanced digital intelligence within a highly progressive SAV package, while sharing the same breakthrough design language and technological innovations of the new Neue Klasse.
Equipped with a 235kW electric motor and rear-wheel drive, the new model variant shares its progressive design language and groundbreaking technological innovations with the BMW iX3 50 xDrive.
Following the recent launch of the BMW iX3 50 xDrive, the arrival of the BMW iX3 40 further strengthens the Neue Klasse portfolio, offering customers an additional entry point into BMW’s next-generation electric mobility experience. The new model combines efficiency, long-range capability and advanced digital intelligence within a highly progressive SAV package.
The BMW iX3 40 is powered by sixth-generation (Gen6) BMW eDrive technology developed specifically for Neue Klasse, representing a significant technological step forward. All major drivetrain components are designed for 800V architecture. An electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) is integrated on the rear axle, delivering power to the rear wheels. The system produces 235kW of power and 500Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from zero to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 200km/h.
Efficient charging, long range capability and advanced battery technology
The high-voltage battery of the BMW iX3 40 offers a usable energy content of 82.6kWh. Its cylindrical lithium-ion cells deliver approximately 20 percent higher energy density compared to previous-generation prismatic cells and are integrated using a cell-to-pack design. The pack-to-open-body construction also enhances structural efficiency, reducing material usage and overall vehicle weight.
The BMW iX3 40 offers a driving range of up to 635km (WLTP). DC fast charging enables the battery to be charged from 10 to 80 percent in only 21 minutes. In just 10 minutes of charging, the vehicle can gain up to 300km of range under optimal conditions.
AC charging is standard at a rate of up to 11kW, with an optional 22kW AC charging allowing a full charge in approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes, for a zero to 100 percent recharge.
Progressive Neue Klasse design and digital user experience
The BMW iX3 40 features the clean, reduced and distinctive design language of the Neue Klasse, including the reinterpreted kidney grille, signature lighting elements, modern proportions that define BMW’s next-generation design identity.
Inside the cabin, the Neue Klasse design philosophy continues with BMW Panoramic iDrive and the latest BMW Operating System X, that projects key vehicle information in outstanding clarity across the screen from A-pillar to A-pillar (42.2/110cm) on a nano-coated black-printed surface across the screen from A-pillar to A-pillar (42.2/110cm).
Standard specification for the BMW iX3 40 mirrors the BMW iX3 50 xDrive, ensuring a consistently high level of equipment across the range.
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with Amazon Alexa+ integration
The BMW Panoramic iDrive multimodal operating logic of the combines touch, haptic and voice-based interaction, with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant playing a central role in the vehicle’s operating concept.
Next-level driving dynamics and digital control architecture
The Neue Klasse software and electronics architecture introduces four high-performance “superbrain” computers, delivering more than 20 times the processing power of previous systems. These centralised units manage driving dynamics, automated driving, infotainment, and comfort and vehicle functions.
At the core of the driving experience is the Heart of Joy control computer with BMW Dynamic Performance Control software, developed entirely in-house. This system reacts up to ten times faster than previous architectures, enhancing precision, agility and overall driving confidence.
The BMW iX3 40 joins an evolving BMW Australia electric product portfolio comprising 11 fully electric variants across 7 models. Six of these variants fall under the luxury car threshold for fuel efficient vehicles. These are in complement to a range of highly efficient combustion engined models as part of BMW’s technology openness strategy, tailored to cater for all customer needs and lifestyle requirements.
