Kia releases first electric van, the PV5 Cargo

BATTERY VEHICLES ARE BECOMING more common in areas other than passenger vehicles, as the release of the PV5 Cargo, Kia’s first dedicated battery electric van demonstrates.

Designed from the ground up on Kia’s E-GMP.S electric platform, the PV5 Cargo delivers a combination of practical capability, electric efficiency, and advanced technology, tailored to meet the evolving needs of Australian businesses and fleet operators.

Following PV5’s win of the prestigious ‘2026 International Van of the Year’ (IVOTY) award, the Cargo variant is the first model to launch in Australia from Kia’s PBV range and is arriving in Kia dealerships now.

Offering up to 416km (WLTP) driving range and a 4420-litre cargo capacity (VDA), the PV5 Cargo provides a flexible solution for a broad range of commercial applications, from urban delivery to trade services.

The PV5 Cargo range is available from $55,990 (plus on road costs), arriving in S 4DR Long Range, 71.2kWh battery configuration and in clear white only.

Purpose-built EV architecture supports real-world capability

At the core of the PV5 Cargo is Kia’s E-GMP.S platform, an architecture designed specifically for electric commercial vehicles. By removing the compromises often associated with adapted internal combustion platforms, the PV5 Cargo is able to maximise both interior space and drivetrain efficiency.

The vehicle is powered by a 71.2kWh high-voltage battery paired with a front-mounted electric motor, producing 120kW of power and 250Nm of torque through a front-wheel-drive configuration. This setup has been designed to deliver predictable, consistent performance in real-world commercial driving conditions.

Charging time for the PV5 varies depending on whether alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) charging is used. With DC fast charging (350kW), the battery can be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in approximately 30 minutes.

With AC charging (11kW), charging from 10 percent to 100 percent takes approximately 6 hours and 30 minutes. This method is suitable for overnight charging at home or routine charging.

The PV5 Cargo’s up to 416km driving range (WLTP) enables it to comfortably support daily business operations, while DC fast charging capabilities enable the driver to maximise their time on the road. This combination of range and charging convenience supports minimal disruption to workflow, particularly in fleet environments where uptime is critical.

Designed for real-world business applications

The PV5 Cargo has been developed with a clear emphasis on practicality and usability, ensuring it meets the day-to-day demands of commercial operators. Starting with an economical short turning diameter of 11m, which enables tight manoeuvring in confined urban streets, narrow laneways, and busy delivery zones where space is limited.

Deliberately, front-wheel drive (FWD) was determined to be the optimal drivetrain choice for PV5. By eliminating the need for a driveshaft to the rear wheels, the vehicle can physically achieve the lowest possible floor height. This also aids in easier loading and unloading via the low rear step in height of just 419mm, reducing physical strain.

Its cargo area offers a generous 4420 litres of usable space, with interior dimensions that allow for the efficient transport of tools, equipment, and freight. The rear cargo area measures up to 2255mm in length, 1565mm in width, and 1520mm in height (in maximum dimensions), creating a flexible environment that can accommodate a variety of applications.

With a kerb weight of 1910kg and a maximum payload of 740kg, PV5 cargo delivers a practical balance of durability and carrying capability, making it a highly efficient solution for a wide range of commercial transport needs.

Access to the load space has been carefully considered to improve efficiency during operation. The inclusion of dual sliding side doors allows for easy loading and unloading in tight urban environments, while twin swing rear doors (with detachable hinges allowing for door opening of 180 degrees), provide wide and convenient access when loading larger items from the rear.

Distinct design, combining function and contemporary style

The PV5 Cargo’s exterior design reflects Kia’s Opposites United philosophy, bringing together clean, modern styling with a strong focus on function.

The front of the vehicle features a bold interpretation of Kia’s signature Tiger Face, framed by LED daytime running lights that extend into the A-pillar, creating a distinctive visual identity. The side profile adopts a clean, boxy silhouette, which not only enhances interior space but also reinforces the vehicle’s practical purpose.

At the rear, Star Map signature lighting provides a modern finishing detail, ensuring the PV5 Cargo maintains a cohesive design language across Kia’s broader EV portfolio.

Dimensionally, the vehicle measures 4695mm in length, 1895mm in width, and 1899mm in height, with a 2995mm wheelbase. This footprint strikes a balance between interior capacity and manoeuvrability, making the PV5 Cargo well-suited to urban environments while retaining strong load-carrying capability.

User-focused interior designed as a mobile workspace

The cabin of the PV5 Cargo has been developed to serve as a practical, driver-focused workspace, recognising the importance of comfort and usability in commercial operation.

A 7.5-inch digital driver cluster provides clear and accessible vehicle information, while a centrally positioned 12.9-inch infotainment display integrates media and navigation functions, all within easy reach. The layout has been designed for intuitive use, helping reduce distraction and improve efficiency during operation.

The interior also incorporates a range of smart storage solutions, including easily accessible dashboard trays and a sliding compartment beneath the centre fascia. A low beltline enhances outward visibility, which is particularly beneficial in urban driving environments where awareness is critical.

Connected technology supports productivity

The PV5 Cargo integrates a suite of technologies designed to support both driver convenience and long-term ownership efficiency.

The inclusion of over-the-air (OTA) update capability enables the vehicle’s software systems to remain current without requiring dealership visits, reducing downtime and supporting continuous improvement over the vehicle’s lifecycle.

A wireless smartphone charging pad provides everyday convenience, while features such as smart key with push-button start and a column-type shift-by-wire system contribute to a simplified and intuitive driving experience.

These elements combine to create a vehicle that is not only practical but also aligned with the expectations of modern, connected business operations.

Vehicle-to-Load capability expands versatility

A key functional highlight of the PV5 Cargo is its Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, which allows the vehicle to act as a mobile power source.

Equipped with a convenient interior outlet in the cargo area and a standard external V2L adaptor, the PV5 Cargo’s V2L delivers up to 3.6 kW of power, allowing for a wide range of tools and electronic equipment to be operated directly from the vehicle. This feature is particularly beneficial for trades and mobile services, reducing reliance on separate generators and improving operational flexibility in off-site or remote environments.

Advanced safety technologies provide confidence

Safety remains a central focus of the PV5 Cargo.

The PV5 features extended application of ultra-high-strength steel to form a rigid structure for occupant protection.  

With its dedicated PBV platform (E-GMP.S), the PV5 adopts a semi-bonnet design incorporating a front multi-skeleton structure help absorb impact energy and minimise its transfer to the passenger compartment.

PV5 Cargo also comes with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems designed to support confident operation across a variety of driving conditions.

Technologies such as Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Lane Following Assist, work together to help manage potential hazards, while Highway Driving Assist and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist enhance long-distance driving capability.

In addition, advanced visibility systems including the Surround View Monitor and Blind-Spot View Monitor, provide greater awareness of the vehicle’s surroundings, particularly when manoeuvring in confined or high-traffic environments. These systems are complemented by features such as parking distance sensors and a rear-view camera, contributing to a well-rounded safety offering.

Working with ANCAP in its independent crash testing assessment, Kia PV5 Cargo delivers a safety grading of PLATINUM with an overall performance score of 91 percent.

Balanced ride and handling tailored for commercial use

Led by Kia Australia’s Chief Ride and Handling Engineer, Graeme Gambold, PV5 Cargo has undergone Kia Australia’s long-established local Ride & Handling Program, which has prioritised navigating urban delivery routes, while also nuancing the ride for rough country roads.

“We’re pleased with the outcome of the PV5 Cargo ride and handling program, which delivers a well-judged balance between urban ride comfort and confident, stable dynamics,” Gambold said.

“The vehicle has been carefully tuned to prioritise composure and comfort in stop-start city conditions, while also maintaining control and refinement across varying road surfaces and payloads.

“The steering calibration offers consistent response and linearity, with natural weighting to support driver confidence throughout everyday operation.”
