AS PART OF A TECHNICAL upgrade and portfolio revision, BMW will refresh its successful X1 and X2 models.
A headline announcement of the revised model offering is launch of the new X1 xDrive25e. This represents a new entry point position for BMW’s highly efficient plug-in hybrid (PHEV) range, bringing together a responsive three-cylinder combustion engine, electric motor and high voltage battery.
Combined output of the X1 xDrive25e is rated at 180kW, with the electric motor contributing 80kW alone.
In pure electric driving mode, the X1 xDrive25e offers 78-86km (WLTP) of range from its fifth-generation lithium-ion 14.2kWh high voltage battery. It is capable of up to 11kW of AC charging as standard and supports both single- and three-phase power AC charging to aid flexibility at home or at a public charging station. A full charge can be achieved in just one hour and 45 minutes.
Introduction of the BMW X1 xDrive25e – due in Australia midyear – means BMW now offers six plug-in hybrid variants in its line-up, alongside nine battery electric vehicle (BEV) variants. The all-new fully electric BMW iX3 of the Neue Klasse generation will also arrive for customer deliveries in the middle of 2026.
Meanwhile, petrol engines aboard the X1 and X2 models will transition to the EU6e emissions configuration as the Australian automotive industry moves to a WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) testing standard in the coming years.
Three-cylinder engines of both the X1 and X2 for the new model ranges will feature 48-volt mild-hybrid systems – which improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions while aiding performance – for the first time.
The fully electric BMW iX1 and iX2 will also benefit from new silicon carbide (SiC) inverters, enhancing performance, power density and battery range.
The silicon carbide units will be fitted to the dual motor iX1 xDrive30 and iX2 xDrive30 in the new line-up. A range simplification will see the X1 eDrive20 and X2 eDrive20 removed.
The new X1 and X2 petrol models will also receive an increase in standard specification to coincide with the updates under the skin.
