MERCEDES-BENZ IS MASTER OF COVERING off all the sub-segments in any given class, and the new compact sedan, the CLA, is no exception.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA represents a significant evolution, underpinned by a new modular platform that supports both electrified combustion and battery-electric drivetrains. After being awarded “Car of the Year 2026” by the European Car of the Year jury in January, the hybrid and electric variants are set to launch in Australia with its stunning design, efficient next-generation technology and dynamic performance.

The new range offered in Australia will comprise of five variants and allows customers to choose the best fit between two powertrain families for their lifestyle: three hybrid models – CLA 180, CLA 200 and CLA 220 4MATIC – and two fully electric models – CLA 200 electric and CLA 350 4MATIC electric.

Across the line-up, the Mercedes-Benz CLA introduces the latest Mercedes-Benz digital architecture, MB.OS, combined with a redesigned interior and a strong focus on efficiency, technology and user experience.

Refined design meets intelligent technology and comfort

The Mercedes-Benz CLA introduces a redesigned exterior focused on aerodynamic efficiency and modern styling. The hybrid variants feature the classic radiator grille with the Mercedes-Benz star pattern in chrome, framed by an LED light guide. Electric models are distinguished by a fully illuminated grille with 142 individual LED star elements that animate when approached.

Inside, the vehicle adopts a minimalist design approach, emphasising digital interfaces and high-quality materials, while an expansive, fixed panoramic glass roof is fitted as standard across the range. The glass roof features heat-insulating laminated safety glass, infrared film and low-emissivity (LowE) coating to protect against sunlight and heat.

Heated front seats, ambient lighting, wireless charging for compatible mobile devices in the front and facial recognition are all standard to the new CLA line-up.

The CLA 200, 220 4MATIC hybrid and 350 4MATIC electric variants all feature AMG Line highlights, including sports seats, multifunction sports steering wheel, AMG floor mats, light carbon-grain aluminium trim elements, AMG bodystyling and sporty engine sound.

In addition, the 200 hybrid and electric, and 350 electric variants offer the optional Premium Package which includes the head-up display, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, MULTIBEAM LED, KEYLESS-GO Package including hands-free access, MBUX Superscreen, Burmester Surround Sound System and illuminated side sills. These features are included as standard in the CLA 220 4MATIC.

Advanced digital architecture and intelligent in-car experience

All variants in the Mercedes-Benz CLA range benefit from a comprehensive suite of digital and high-performance features. Central to the cabin is the signature MBUX Superscreen, a stunning display combining a 10.25-inch driver display with a 14-inch central touchscreen and an optional 14-inch passenger display, all housed behind one continuous sheet of glass. The MBUX Superscreen is powered by a gaming-grade Unity engine for ultra-smooth graphics and animations.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA is the first model to fully operate on the in-house developed Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). The next-generation MB.OS enables regular, over-the-air updates for vehicle and safety systems, including driver assistance functions.

The AI-powered voice assistant integrates ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Bing technologies, revolutionising the relationship between vehicle and driver by enabling natural conversation and contextual responses. In addition, passenger entertainment can provide access to streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+.

Available on the CLA 200 hybrid and electric, 220 4MATIC hybrid and 350 4MATIC electric variants, audio is delivered via the Burmester 3D surround sound system, featuring 16 speakers and 850W output with Dolby Atmos support.

In addition, the Parking package with 360-degree camera, including PARKTRONIC and Parking Assist also comes standard on all new CLA variants.

Engineered for efficiency, comfort and precise handling

The CLA is equipped as standard with a steel-sprung comfort suspension, featuring a newly developed three-link front axle with forged aluminium components for reduced weight and enhanced rigidity. This setup supports precise steering response and refined driving characteristics. At the rear, a newly developed multi-link axle, a concept typically found in larger Mercedes-Benz models, further enhances ride comfort and handling balance.

In all variants, the new exterior has been designed with efficiency as the focus – the smooth flowing front extends into the windscreen to split the air and optimise aerodynamic performance, resulting in a remarkably low drag coefficient of 0.21cd.

Consistent focus on state-of-the-art-safety technologies

The CLA combines advanced driver assistance systems with a robust body structure and integrated restraint systems. For the first time in this segment, a centre airbag is fitted as standard, deploying between the driver and front passenger in the event of a severe side impact.

The electric CLA has been recognised as the top-performing vehicle in the 2025 Euro NCAP tests, achieving a five-star rating and the highest overall results across all categories. It delivered outstanding performance in occupant protection for adults and children, as well as in the protection of vulnerable road users and safety assistance systems.

High-efficiency electric drivetrain with advanced charging capability

The all-electric CLA features a rear-axle drive layout, bringing a configuration typically reserved for higher segments into the compact class. Its 200kW electric drive unit, developed in-house and derived from the VISION EQXX, achieves a battery-to-wheel efficiency of up to 93 percent.

A two-speed transmission on the rear axle enhances both performance and efficiency, enabling strong acceleration in urban driving and optimised energy use at higher speeds. Shift points are continuously adapted to driving conditions, supporting a balance of responsiveness and long-distance efficiency.

Energy recuperation plays a central role in maximising range. A new integrated brake system combines multiple components into a compact module, allowing most braking processes to be handled through energy recovery. With recuperation output of up to 200kW, the system supports efficient deceleration — even to a complete stop — while maintaining a consistent and confident brake feel.

The CLA electric variants are built on a new-generation electric architecture, combining high energy density batteries with fast DC charging capability. The 800-volt system can significantly reduce charging time in conjunction with the new battery generation and a maximum charging power of up to 320 kW. The CLA electric variants come standard with a DC converter in Australia and 400V chargers can be used as well to top up the battery. Together with intelligent thermal management and advanced recuperation, this drivetrain supports both everyday usability and long-distance capability.

The CLA 350 4MATIC all-wheel drive model also features an 80 kW drive unit on the front axle. For higher efficiency, the DCU can quickly decouple the front electric motor under low load, causing the electric motor and parts of the transmission to stand still. This reduces front axle losses by up to 90 percent and optimises range.

High-tech hybrid powertrain with intelligent electrification

The combustion engine, a four-cylinder petrol unit with a 1.5-litre displacement, is paired with a newly developed 48-volt battery with lithium-ion technology that offers an energy content of up to 1.3kWh. The high-tech hybrid delivers improved responsiveness and smoother transitions between electric and combustion power.

The electric motor provides intelligent support across the entire speed range. It significantly improves acceleration, especially at low engine speeds. At urban speeds and when less than 20kW is needed, the hybrid models can drive using electric power alone. The electric motor, including the inverter, is integrated into a new, very compact eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (8F-eDCT). A special feature of the motor is its ability to recuperate in all eight gears, recovering up to 25kW of energy.

The CLA 180 and 200 come with front-wheel drive, while the CLA 220 4MATIC, sitting at the top of the hybrid range, introduces all-wheel drive, offering enhanced traction and performance. The electrified drivetrain provides torque assistance across the rev range, while the system’s ability to recuperate energy in multiple driving conditions contributes to improved efficiency.
